Take an old Škoda Rapid, and swap in a 20V 4A-GE. It would probably take a lot of work, and would probably be pretty sketchy, however, it sounds like fun. Rear engine, rear wheel drive, and ~160 hp with the 20V; all in a car that weights ~ 500 lbs less than an AW11 MR2.

It would be worth it alone for how the trunk opens.
